MORE INFORMATION

Our Mission

To create opportunities and programs that promote equity in health, education, and quality of life for the Latinx* community in Boulder County.

Our Focus

We help children, families, and the Latinx* community in general with programs focused on health, education, and human development.

Terminology

Latinx* is utilized throughout our website and programming as an umbrella term to bring attention to go beyond the gender binary of distinct male and female identities and sexualities. Within our community, folks may identify as Chicano/a/x, Mexicano/a/x, etc. and may reject Latinx entirely. The X does not serve as a fluid way of non-binary speech as opposed to the ‘e’ (Latine), which will be utilized throughout our communications.

Immigrant* It is important to recognize the histories of the land and the original caretakers and communities that are still here. The current use of the term “immigrant” often assumes that communities are ‘newcomers’ and erases the history of migration, community building, trade, and more that has taken place long before colonial boarders were imposed.

“A people without knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots.” - Marcus Garvey

Language is a powerful tool in any community and AMISTAD values the importance of intentional terminology within our work. Our programming approach is to provide meaningful opportunities for the community to engage in and explore in their identity formation in a way that honors their process and cultivates autonomy to identify individually and collectively. We recognize the diversity that exists in our communities through Indigeneity, racial, gender, migration histories, culture, and more.

Our communities are not homogenous and moving away from colonial and institutionalized blanket terms is a movement to reclaim identities that have been oppressed – and this process is to be respected, honored, and celebrated.
